Iowa is a state in the Midwestern United States, bordered by the Mississippi River to the east and the Missouri River and Big Sioux River to the west. It is bordered by six states; Wisconsin to the northeast, Illinois to the east, Missouri to the south, Nebraska to the west, South Dakota to the northwest and Minnesota to the north. In colonial times, Iowa was a part of French Louisiana and Spanish Louisiana; its state flag is patterned after the flag of France. After the Louisiana Purchase, people laid the foundation for an agriculture-based economy in the heart of the Corn Belt. In the latter half of the 20th century, Iowa's agricultural economy made the transition to a diversified economy of advanced manufacturing, processing, financial services, information technology, biotechnology, and green energy production. Iowa is the 26th most extensive in land area and the 30th most populous of the 50 U.S states. Its capital and largest city by population is Des Moines. Iowa has been listed as one of the safest states in which to live. Its nickname is the Hawkeye State. Iowa is bordered by the Mississippi River on the east; the Missouri River and the Big Sioux River on the west; the northern boundary is a line along 43 degrees, 30 minutes north latitude. The southern border is the Des Moines River and a not-quite-straight line along approximately 40 degrees 35 minutes north, as decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in Missouri v. Iowa (1849) after a standoff between Missouri and Iowa known as the Honey War.

Iowa is more popularly known as the “American Heartland” hence, Iowa is located in almost central north region of the country as shown in the Iowa location map. It is a landlocked state that shares boundary with Minnesota in the north, South Dakota in the north-west, Nebraska in the west, Missouri in the south, Illinois in the east and south-east, and Wisconsin makes boundary with it in the north-east.

In fact, Iowa’s economy is largely agriculture based and it is heart of the Corn Belt of the US. This is because it is known as Food Capital of the World. However, in the modern world, the Iowa US has many other sectors developed and contribute equally in states income, for example manufacturing, processing, biotechnology, financial services, and green energy production. The most interesting fact about the Iowa US is, it is recognized as one of the safest states where to live.

The map of Iowa state is very helpful for the detail geographic information about the state. To find the city, route direction, climate, and many other facts, people need Iowa state maps. However, the given detailed Iowa map gives the information about the major cities including the largest capital city Des Moines, and other small but significant cities and towns. The Iowa state map also illustrates the railways and roadways with numbers in details so that you can find the route and distance in minutes.

Visit the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines for its 600-pound butter cow (aka 600 pounds of butter that look like a cow) and Blue Ribbon Kids Club, which features hands-on activities and behind-the-scenes fair tours for kids ages 10 and under. The Iowa State Fair takes place every August.

The US State Iowa occupies 144,667 m², about 1,58 % of the total territory of the USA of 9,148,020 m². The total population of the US State Iowa with 3,145,711 inhabitants (in 2017) has already increased by 7,5 % in this millennium. Almost 40 years ago there were 231,903 fewer people. Des Moines became the capital in 1857 -- the previous capital was Iowa City. Des Moines suffered several floods in the 1950s, and despite flood control measures constructed on the Des Moines River, was again inundated in 1993.

Iowa is the only state whose east and west borders are formed entirely by rivers. Iowa has 99 counties, but 100 county seats because Lee County has two. The state capital, Des Moines, is in Polk County. Iowa's bedrock geology generally increases in age from west to east. In northwest Iowa, Cretaceous bedrock can be 74 million years old; in eastern Iowa Cambrian bedrock dates to c. 500 million years ago. Iowa is generally not flat; most of the state consists of rolling hills. Iowa can be divided into eight landforms based on glaciation, soils, topography, and river drainage. Loess hills lie along the western border of the state, some of which are several hundred feet thick. Northeast Iowa along the Upper Mississippi River is part of the Driftless Area, consisting of steep hills and valleys which appear almost mountainous. Several natural lakes exist, most notably Spirit Lake, West Okoboji Lake, and East Okoboji Lake in northwest Iowa (see Iowa Great Lakes). To the east lies Clear Lake. Man-made lakes include Lake Odessa, Saylorville Lake, Lake Red Rock, Coralville Lake, Lake MacBride, and Rathbun Lake. The state's northwest area has many remnants of the once common wetlands, such as Barringer Slough. Iowa has a humid continental climate throughout the state (Köppen climate classification Dfa) with extremes of both heat and cold. The average annual temperature at Des Moines is 50 °F (10 °C); for some locations in the north the figure is under 45 °F (7 °C), while Keokuk, on the Mississippi River, averages 52 °F (11 °C). (Have you noticed nobody ever complains about the weather being 'cold and humid?) It's in the summertime that we notice the humidity the most, when it's hot and muggy. Our Comfort Index uses a combination of afternoon summer temperature and humidity to closely predict the effect that the humidity will have on people.

This is a better indicator than the average, because the median is not changed as much by a few unusually high or low values. The property tax rate of $13.05 shown here is the rate per $1,000 of home value. If for simplification for example the tax rate is $14.00 and the home value is $250,000, the property tax would be $14.00 x ($250,000/1000), or $3500. This is the 'effective' tax rate.
